IC card industry development process
Apr 20, 2018

The magnetic stripe card was born in 1952. Because of its simplicity and low cost, it has been widely used in the fields of finance, mail, and aviation. The circulation of magnetic stripe cards has exceeded billions in the world. However, magnetic stripe cards have disadvantages such as small information storage, short storage time, and poor confidentiality in applications. In recent years, IC cards that developed with the development of integrated circuits have gradually replaced magnetic stripe cards due to their good confidentiality and large storage capacity.

The concept of the IC card was put forward in the early 1970s. In 1976, the French company BULL first created IC card products. In 1977, Motorola worked with one of its computer customers to develop a smart card that formed the first generation of smart card products that integrate a programmable microcontroller and a non-volatile memory into a single module. Inside, then embedded in a credit card that meets the ISO7810 standard. Since then, smart cards have begun to develop rapidly, and the technology used by smart cards is also changing rapidly. In 1979, the world’s first single-chip chip designed for smart cards was created, resulting in a second-generation smart card product that was used in France, Switzerland, and Scandinavia. It was mainly used in the field of bank cards. . After entering the 1990s, smart card applications in communications, health, and transportation have also begun to flourish.

Since its birth, IC cards have gone from memory cards to logic encryption and CPU cards, contactless IC cards to contactless IC cards, diffusion applications from a few industries to multiple industries, and continuous development from single functions to multifunction cards.

Evolution process. Compared with magnetic stripe cards, IC cards have better confidentiality and larger storage capacity and can achieve more functions. IC cards have gradually replaced magnetic stripe cards in many industries and become mainstream card types.

The smart card device industry continues to develop and innovate along with the development and changes in the smart card industry. Changes in smart card appearance, technology, applicable specifications, and standard requirements will change the production process accordingly, resulting in the replacement and upgrade of smart card devices. , driving the expansion of market demand for the smart card device industry.
